As the sun creeped through the window of the hotel, Mary Jane quickly jumped up to shut the blinds. She laid back down, only assuming she would get thirty more minutes to sleep. Before shutting her eyes and slipping back into a deep slumber, Mary phone began to buzz. As she noticed the random number, she quietly answered the phone. Mary failed to recognize the unfamiliar voice on the other but she didn’t hesitate to ask. “Who are you?” Mary asked. The recipient on the other end of the phone failed to answer Mary’s question but responded by saying, “Do you know your purpose for life?”.

The call dropped and Mary became confused almost instantly. While she was unsure of what just transpired, Mary J couldn’t forget the question. It played repeatedly through her head ever since the phone hung up. Trying to convince herself that maybe, just maybe, that was a prank call gone horribly wrong but that didn’t stop her from letting a phone call wreck her day. After a couple of hours went by, Mary agreed that she would carry on her day regularly and completely forget about the call earlier on.

On a one day vacation, Mary decided that maybe it was time to leave Charlotte, North Carolina and head somewhere towards the beaches. So she packed her things, left the Marriott Hotel just before check out time and headed south east. While traveling, Mary mind still wander over the previous conversation but she was determined not to let that overcome her apparent happiness. She arrived in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina just before two pm. She checked into a hotel and began to unpack her things for a second time today. Her first priority was the beach. It was something about the beach that eases all kinds of pain and for that there was nothing that could stop her from reaching the beach, not even a heart wrenching phone call.

As Mary stepped foot on the beach, she could feel the warm and smooth sand penetrate her feet. The beautiful aquatic smell in the air reminded her that there was more water around than land. She quickly realized that she was home again. She realized that in this domain, nothing could ever harm her. Mary began to settle down from her thoughts and became at peace with regards to her location. She saw a local bartender selling ice cold beers on the beach front so purchased one and down it went. The ice from the cooler almost froze her hand instantly even though it was a record eighty nine degrees outside.

After drinking her first beer in a long time, Mary grabbed a lawn chair from the rental department and quietly opened up a novel she had been reading. Today was one of the quietest days Mary could ever recall. She could count the families on the beach with one hand, the birds chirping evaporated into the bright sky, the line for the alcoholic beverages was down to one person, and most importantly, no lifeguard was present at the moment.

As Mary began to open her book, she noticed that staying focus was easier said than done. So many questions were racing through her mind but there was no way to stop them. While trying to focus on her book, which seemed impossible, Mary looked up for one moment. All of sudden screams ranged out. The screams were so loud Mary thought someone had jumped from a hotel window, but she quickly figured out that wasn’t the case. As Mary J stood up, she saw two little boys ranging from 5 to 7 years old, drowning about thirty yards out in the ocean. Not one thing processed in Mary’s mind. Before she even knew it Mary was thirty yards out in the water trying to save these kids lives. There were no lifeguards, no parental observation, or anyone else for that matter.

The waves had picked up considerably and rescuing two people became tougher than expected. Mary came in contact with one individual but because of the troubling waves her hands became unattached to first kid she tried to save. She then turned her attention to the youngest child. He manage to get reached Mary and obtain and a grip that for some reason was never broken despite the horrendous waves. He told Mary J that his brother was still in danger but on the plus side he continued to remain afloat. The oldest child was not out of the woods yet and Mary knew it.

Mary J eventually got a hold of both kids at the same time and was preparing to swim back to shore. While swimming with the kids, she began to see hundreds of people gathering by the beach. Apparently, she had no idea that during this whole attempt to save two lives, she was being watched by onlookers.

When they returned back to the beach the children were reunited with their families. Mary collapsed on the beach from exerting so much energy to save these two young adolescent lives. Reporters and local people began to surround Mary. Questions upon questions were being asked but Mary had no response to give. She was tired, worn out, and exhausted.

One reporter snuck into the crowd from the back and got the opportunity to ask Mary a familiar question. “What is your purpose of life?” the reporter asked. Mary glanced back at the kids she just save and responded, “That’s my purpose for life”.
